A Frightening Endeavor

Decisions.

Choices.

Options.

Left or right? Dark chocolate or milk? Journalism class assignment one, two, or three?

Everyday is filled with decisions. Some are petty; some are life-changing. One choice instead of another could mean our life's course is completely altered.

Most likely the remainder of your life is not resting on whether you choose milk or dark chocolate, but sometimes the daily decisions, even the one we don't realize we are making, completely change who you are and what you will become. Those of you who know me will quickly agree that I have enough trouble even making chocolate decisions. One can only imagine what it's like deciding what my future holds.

My mind races as that dreaded question reaches my ears: "So what do you want to do with your life?" Many a time I have been tempted to stare back and scream emphatically, "I have absolutely no idea!!!" The question is asked so casually as if they were asking if I want fries with my order. But it's not so easy to answer. I seriously hope that a diploma and a wedding ring are involved in the coming years of my life, but beyond that, I can't say.

Sometimes I wonder if I don't want to decide for sure because I'm afraid of failing. Perhaps I'm afraid to plan out my whole life only to never see it reach my expectations...

I could say that I envy the people who have their entire lives planned out. But I don't. I can't stop thinking about how boring that would be. The past few years' experiences have taught me that life is meant to be an adventure. I know that sounds like something Julie Andrews would say in some cheesy musical, but I've found it to be true. Why waste away the one chance we've been given on this earth not making a difference? Whatever the rest of my time is dedicated to, rest assured, it will not be boring.

All that to say, I don't have a clue what I'm going to do with the rest of my life, much less exactly what college I want to go to or which major I want to pursue. That scares me. The future is exciting, yes; but uncertainty is frightening. Still, where would excitement come in if there was no uncertainty? Where would we find adventure if there was no fear?

The past three years of my life have been filled with trials and successes that have made me who I am now. If those experiences have prepared me for what is happening now, then I can't wait to see what my current experiences are preparing me for. Never in my wildest dreams would I have seen myself sitting here today. I'd better start dreaming now if I hope to have any idea what will happen next.

I think my point throughout this long and scatter-brained response is that the future scares me, but I'm okay with that. Thank goodness my life is not in my own hands.

Merely A Beginning

It's always the hardest part... beginning; the start, the initiation, the opening sentence. Why do we feel that the first step must always be without fault? "Putting the best foot forward" does not always ensure perfection. So what does it ensure? A journey's first step does not always determine its course. In fact, it is the steps in between that will leave the lasting impact: the sprints, the struggles, the strolls.
It is said that the journey of a million miles begins with the first step.
So there is my first step.

But that's all it is: merely a beginning.
